Queensland has a dynamic and diverse information and communications technology (ICT) industry that is growing strongly. The State is home to approximately 5,600 information and communications technology (ICT) businesses.

Queensland's ICT industry is fast becoming a leader in intellectual property creation, notably in high-value software and services, with expertise in specialised markets like mining, asset management, business solutions, games development and e-security.

Australia is the fifth largest ICT market in the Asia Pacific region behind Japan, China, Korea and India and is projected to grow into a A$300 billion sector by 2020.

The Queensland Government focuses its investment attraction efforts on particular sub-sectors of the ICT industry, including:

  • e-security
  • software development
  • simulation technology
  • business process outsourcing/knowledge process outsourcing
  • data/service centres.

  • employs more than 77,000 people
  • generates A$23.6 billion in annual sales
  • exports goods and services valued at A$1.3 billion annually
  • spends over A$850 million on research and development.

    • nine of Queensland's universities have ICT degree programs, which are producing large numbers of quality graduates who are being internationally recognised for their high-quality, innovative skills
    • there are over 3,000 IT students in Brisbane alone

    • Queensland's universities are renowned for leading-edge ICT research
    • six ICT-related research centres are based within Queensland universities:
      • The Information Security Institute
      • Software Quality Institute
      • Software Verification Research Centre
      • The Centre for Software Maintenance
      • A node of National ICT Australia (NICTA QLD)
      • Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT).
